Enabling?

A friend is to be the subject of an alcohol intervention. The people organizing the intervention would like his friends stop "enabling" him.
If by enabling they mean not to give him money to buy booze or to offer him booze I would go along with that without hesitation. I was shocked to discover that what they mean is that if he declines going immediatly to rehab that we should cut him off as in not give him a place to stay or to give him food. They believe that by doing so it will force his hand and limit his choices.

I will not go along with that plan. If he makes the choice not to go to rehab and he has no place to go I will welcome him to stay in my spare room and I will buy him food. I also have contacts who could offer him employment. I am so angered by this that I may forewarn him of the pending intervention to spare him the humiliation. I have no booze in my house so that is not an issue. The strong arm tactics are not acceptable to me.

any ideas?

So, I was watching this Japanese movie and there was a deaf/mute character that used sign language. Now, since each language has their own sign language, got me wondering if there was such a thing as sign language translators. That is someone who translates say Japanese sign language to American sign language.

feeling lonely?

don't despair:

Just post boatloads of pics of your hard cock or subby ass in your profile - I mean fill your entire profile with them and then use one as your avatar...

and I'm sure some other brother will come and help you out pretty instantly,

you know, suck your dick; fuck your ass

becuz ya know:

It must be the best representation of yourself that you can come up with to express publicly.

Kind of like the girlies who fill their profiles with pics of themselves, seemingly perpetually at Burning Man in near undress

Ya know: really deep and the most authentic representation of self and of one's needs.

why are americans so fearful of amending the constitution? in my eyes, the founders intended us to change, edit, re-edit, modify, etc to our heart's content. they knew they wrote an imperfect document and put the power of the pen into our hands, not the hands of the president, not the hands of the congress, and not the hands of the supreme court.

why do we pay so much deference to men two hundred years ago who were slave-owners, did not allow women the right to vote, did not allow blacks to vote, paid no heed to chivalry, and so on?

I was standing at work, and the tought struck me.. How is magnets mined? Because it would require mining equipment to move trought the rock. As far as i know most of this equipment is made out of iron. Wouldent that mean that the catepilar get,s stuck towards the rock wall?
So how do they get to the magnets? Plastic catepillars?

Heyall. Just got back in the groove here.

Isn't it strange how when we talk about foreigners we use words to cast them in the worst possible light, but when it's domestic we use much tamer and euphamistic language? For instance a foreign ruler who fraudulently steals an election and tortures, and spies on people is a "junta", "dictator" or "despot", but with Shrub, I mean Bush, it's an "Administration". If you're a Christian who shoots abortion doctors and blows-up gay discos you are a "Fundamentalist", but if you blow shit up and shoot people and you're from the Middle East, you're a "Radical Muslim".

There's got to be dozens of these double standards. Can you think of others?

and their usage appears to mystify an entire generation of Americans.

Perhaps they want to save trees so they don't buy one, or two for that matter.

That doesn't explain their lack of use. Perhaps illiteracy is more pervasive a problem than we know.

Perhaps Burning Man actually is the center of the universe but that doesn't explain the growing trend of English as Second Language speakers, speaking and writing in English better than native folk.

I took to doing it out of financial necessity at one point. I use clippers. Problem is, it's hard to cut the back of my own head with them. (If anyone could teach me how to do this, I'm all ears!) So the back is long(er, not really long) while the front and top are short. Too short in one place where I gapped it, but hey, I'm taller than most people, so almost no one notices.

Suicide Bomber Chimps?

I’ve been reading some utilitarian bioethicists who argue against the use of animals in medical research. The argument seems to be that what counts most is one’s cognitive ability, not one’s species. Thus, the life of a healthy chimp is more valuable than that of an anencephalic child. Thus, one would be more moral to conduct medical experiments on such a child than upon a normal chimp. Since we’re *not* performing gruesome experiments on such children, then there are no circumstances under which it could be moral to use chimps (or other primates) in medical research.

I thought to myself: what if this train ran both ways?

Consider the military and its use of human subjects. Clearly, we *are* willing to make soldiers of young, healthy men and women. This isn’t a medical experiment, of course, but it is a case of putting a primate in harm’s way for the larger good of society. In a utilitarian sense, these are exceptionally valuable primates because they are young and healthy with many options open to them, such as higher education, raising a family, citizenship, and voluntary service to the community. (Not to mention, only human primates can effectively work for the advancement of animal rights!)

So it seems to me that the lives of human soldiers should be worth much more—in a strictly utilitarian sense—than those of any other healthy primate.

So why don’t we, say, suit up chimps, put ‘em in cars loaded with bombs and propel them into terrorist enclaves?

Or have apes in uniform patrol dangerous areas drawing sniper fire that might otherwise strike a human primate with a higher IQ whose death would cause more pain to more other beings than that of any primates? (Nonhuman primates live in smaller communities than do humans; it’s a rare primate whose death would grieve over fifty people, while most humans in their late teens and early twenties would be missed by many more people if they fell during battle.)

LISTEN: I am *not* advocating this. I’m wondering why utilitarian ethicists are *not* advocating this.

Why don’t we enlist other primates in the military? Isn’t it “speciesist” to make cannon fodder only of human primates?

why does anyone find these interesting?

myself, i am going through a phase of complete addiction and even tolerate the most obnoxious of hosts and bad designs just so i can get my fix... tivo of course makes hours and hours of viewing time possible, right into 2am, giving me a nap before they start again at 5am... i still do stuff in the day, but i am skipping sleep so i can watch all the design shows...

designed to sell
design remix
redesign
save my bath
spice up my kitchen
and at least two or three more

is there something going on with me at this time that makes me more drawn to these at this time or maybe it is just new territory in that black hole of lost time watching tv...

Hello and a shameless plug!

Hi!

Firstly I would like to say hello and introduce myself and secondly I would like to introduce my new Tribe, http://tribes.tribe.net/moneyexpert

Sorry if this seems like advertising, I suppose it is in a way but I am trying to spread the word in popular Tribes, here’s the basics of the Tribe, if you want to join I’d love to have you – if not, never mind and I’m sorry to have bothered you!

In these times negative equity, high mortgage rates, low incomes and of spam email and con artists promising to make you a millionaire it’s time to fight back, not at the con artists but at the institutions that try to take our hard-earned money. The banks, service providers and any other institution that tries to make a profit from YOU.

Who am I? I’m a lover of money, but who isn’t? More importantly I’m a terms and conditions addict and a professional loophole spotter and I’m here enable my fellow consumers to fight against the industries.

Being good with money isn’t about being tight with money and it’s not just for those who are penniless. Being good with money is a skill that we are rapidly losing in these modern times.

We make money decisions everyday, how we get to work, how we finance our home, to go to the cinema or to wait to rent or buy on DVD. The way you need to think is “Every single time I spend my money, I have an opportunity to save some money”.

Many people simply live outside their income, it’s a slippery slope and easy to get into a position where you have contracted yourself to live outside your means.

The concept of this tribe is to band together to share money saving ideas, ways to be a smart consumer. My aim is to help you make the money you currently have go further, just by showing you a better way to use it. Money education is something the world desperately needs.

This kind of money regime will require some work on your behalf but it is worthwhile, the kind of money you save could be equivalent to a 10, 20 or even 30% pay rise.

Pessimism - Protection of the Ego (discuss)

Pessimism: Being Pessimistic/Negative about a Thing or Occurrence places that Thing/Occurrence outside of the Ego. It is used as a protection against criticism and negative development.

Optimism: Being Optimistic about a Thing/Occurrence involves incorporating the things One likes about Oneself into a thing or Occurrence. When it gets criticized or develops in a negative fashion it reflects directly on the Ego.

Optimism is opening oneself up, allowing sharing of the Thing/Occurrence and thus the facets/traits One likes most about Oneself and opening up to possible annihilation and criticism of those facets. On the contrary, Pessimism allows deliberate Alienation. One never has to share Oneself by being Pessimistic.

Pessimism allows the possibility that the Thing/Occurrence will turn out to be/develop [in a ] Positive [fashion]. If it does, One will immediately let it reflect on the Ego, but is not able to share the fact that One has taken credit for it, as that is not socially appropriate.
If it doesn't, One has protected the Ego beforehand and is not forced to let it reflect on the Ego and One is thus never forced to take credit for it.

Conclusion:
Optimism is for the powerful of Mind and strong at Heart. Pessimism is for the weakened of Mind and fearful at Heart.

Discuss my theory!

Who would it be? (Make that "from" television. I'm not asking "who would you like to be in an episode with?" though that could make for a good thread too...)

I like Abby and Ziva from "NCIS"----they're polar opposites, yet I'm drawn to them both. Though I don't want to imagine the three of us together....

Sometimes when you're walking alone at night in a strange neighborhood it might be a good thing... sometimes people pry for info that is none of their business.... if you're clear about your boundaries and someone is trying to breech those do you ever get suspicious of why?

In crime shows (think CSI) and thriller movies, the cops always seem to enter the crime scene without turning on the lights, even when they know that no one else alive in in the house. Instead, they use tiny flashlights instead. Any possible logic behind this?

im refferring to an earlier post about FloriDUH and the Catholic church, it just struck me that many of todays laws reflect a degradation of morals and ethics, like feeding the homeless became illegal in Orlando, and there are others. wht the hell is going on with the laws these days, why is it illegal to help people? why do we continuosly give up our freedoms and rights to do good for others? When did this start? who started it?and for gods sake, WHY?i understand the basic pointis that some people might get taken advantage of, but damn, making it ILLEGAL? what the hell?

Anyway, what I was saying is that I try to be real Christlike and sh-t. Dig? Hey, Bobby, was that that Porsche I buy you at the bottom of the pool this morning, baby? Anyway, what was I saying?"

So exactly how dumb are you and your respective community?

This commentary comes as no surprise: we're probably going to hell in a handbasket for remedial education courses.

Makes it hard to come up with a plan for saving humanity.

http://www.sfgate.com/columnists/morford/

American kids, dumber than dirt
Warning: The next generation might just be the biggest pile of idiots in U.S. history

have this ongoing discussion with a longtime reader who also just so happens to be a longtime Oakland high school teacher, a wonderful guy who's seen generations of teens come and generations go and who has a delightful poetic sensibility and quirky outlook on his life and his family and his beloved teaching career.

And he often writes to me in response to something I might've written about the youth of today, anything where I comment on the various nefarious factors shaping their minds and their perspectives and whether or not, say, EMFs and junk food and cell phones are melting their brains and what can be done and just how bad it might all be.

His response: It is not bad at all. It's absolutely horrifying.

My friend often summarizes for me what he sees, firsthand, every day and every month, year in and year out, in his classroom. He speaks not merely of the sad decline in overall intellectual acumen among students over the years, not merely of the astonishing spread of lazy slackerhood, or the fact that cell phones and iPods and excess TV exposure are, absolutely and without reservation, short-circuiting the minds of the upcoming generations. Of this, he says, there is zero doubt.

Nor does he speak merely of the notion that kids these days are overprotected and wussified and don't spend enough time outdoors and don't get any real exercise and therefore can't, say, identify basic plants, or handle a tool, or build, well, anything at all. Again, these things are a given. Widely reported, tragically ignored, nothing new.

No, my friend takes it all a full step — or rather, leap — further. It is not merely a sad slide. It is not just a general dumbing down. It is far uglier than that.

We are, as far as urban public education is concerned, essentially at rock bottom. We are now at a point where we are essentially churning out ignorant teens who are becoming ignorant adults and society as a whole will pay dearly, very soon, and if you think the hordes of easily terrified, mindless fundamentalist evangelical Christian lemmings have been bad for the soul of this country, just wait.

It's gotten so bad that, as my friend nears retirement, he says he is very seriously considering moving out of the country so as to escape what he sees will be the surefire collapse of functioning American society in the next handful of years due to the absolutely irrefutable destruction, the shocking — and nearly hopeless — dumb-ification of the American brain. It is just that bad.

Now, you may think he's merely a curmudgeon, a tired old teacher who stopped caring long ago. Not true. Teaching is his life. He says he loves his students, loves education and learning and watching young minds awaken. Problem is, he is seeing much less of it. It's a bit like the melting of the polar ice caps. Sure, there's been alarmist data about it for years, but until you see it for yourself, the deep visceral dread doesn't really hit home.

He cites studies, reports, hard data, from the appalling effects of television on child brain development (i.e.; any TV exposure before 6 years old and your kid's basic cognitive wiring and spatial perceptions are pretty much scrambled for life), to the fact that, because of all the insidious mandatory testing teachers are now forced to incorporate into the curriculum, of the 182 school days in a year, there are 110 when such testing is going on somewhere at Oakland High. As one of his colleagues put it, "It's like weighing a calf twice a day, but never feeding it."

But most of all, he simply observes his students, year to year, noting all the obvious evidence of teens' decreasing abilities when confronted with even the most basic intellectual tasks, from understanding simple history to working through moderately complex ideas to even (in a couple recent examples that particularly distressed him) being able to define the words "agriculture," or even "democracy." Not a single student could do it.

It gets worse. My friend cites the fact that, of the 6,000 high school students he estimates he's taught over the span of his career, only a small fraction now make it to his grade with a functioning understanding of written English. They do not know how to form a sentence. They cannot write an intelligible paragraph. Recently, after giving an assignment that required drawing lines, he realized that not a single student actually knew how to use a ruler.

It is, in short, nothing less than a tidal wave of dumb, with once-passionate, increasingly exasperated teachers like my friend nearly powerless to stop it. The worst part: It's not the kids' fault. They're merely the victims of a horribly failed educational system.

Then our discussion often turns to the meat of it, the bigger picture, the ugly and unavoidable truism about the lack of need among the government and the power elite in this nation to create a truly effective educational system, one that actually generates intelligent, thoughtful, articulate citizens.

Hell, why should they? After all, the dumber the populace, the easier it is to rule and control and launch unwinnable wars and pass laws telling them that sex is bad and TV is good and God knows all, so just pipe down and eat your Taco Bell Double-Supremo Burrito and be glad we don't arrest you for posting dirty pictures on your cute little blog.

This is about when I try to offer counterevidence, a bit of optimism. For one thing, I've argued generational relativity in this space before, suggesting maybe kids are no scarier or dumber or more dangerous than they've ever been, and that maybe some of the problem is merely the same old awkward generation gap, with every current generation absolutely convinced the subsequent one is terrifically stupid and malicious and will be the end of society as a whole. Just the way it always seems.

I also point out how, despite all the evidence of total public-education meltdown, I keep being surprised, keep hearing from/about teens and youth movements and actions that impress the hell out of me. Damn kids made the Internet what it is today, fer chrissakes. Revolutionized media. Broke all the rules. Still are.

Hell, some of the best designers, writers, artists, poets, chefs, and so on that I meet are in their early to mid-20s. And the nation's top universities are still managing, despite a factory-churning mentality, to crank out young minds of astonishing ability and acumen. How did these kids do it? How did they escape the horrible public school system? How did they avoid the great dumbing down of America? Did they never see a TV show until they hit puberty? Were they all born and raised elsewhere, in India and Asia and Russia? Did they all go to Waldorf or Montessori and eat whole-grain breads and play with firecrackers and take long walks in wild nature? Are these kids flukes? Exceptions? Just lucky?

My friend would say, well, yes, that's precisely what most of them are. Lucky, wealthy, foreign-born, private-schooled ... and increasingly rare. Most affluent parents in America — and many more who aren't — now put their kids in private schools from day one, and the smart ones give their kids no TV and minimal junk food and no video games. (Of course, this in no way guarantees a smart, attuned kid, but compared to the odds of success in the public school system, it sure seems to help). This covers about, what, 3 percent of the populace?

As for the rest, well, the dystopian evidence seems overwhelming indeed, to the point where it might be no stretch at all to say the biggest threat facing America is perhaps not global warming, not perpetual warmongering, not garbage food or low-level radiation or way too much Lindsay Lohan, but a populace far too ignorant to know how to properly manage any of it, much less change it all for the better.

What, too fatalistic? Don't worry. Soon enough, no one will know what the word even means.

Some of you may have heard, that Neil Logman, member of the chamber of commerce in Denali Alaska, is making the decision, to get rid of Fairbanks Bus 142, in hopes that this action will deter would be pilgrims from making the journay after Sean Penns movie "Into the Wild" is released and merges with popular imagination. The reason being, that people might get into trouble, the same way Alex did. This not only destroys an artifact of cultural legend, but some would say also destroys a true relic of freedom. One can argue that this decision is being made in haste, neglecting to contemplate what that bus represents to the mind of man, especially western mind. We are burning Waldons cabin here! Maybe something can be done. Maybe Sean Penn can do something? I dont know.

Are you anti-life?

Everyone has heard of people talking about "pro-choice". Other's talk about "pro-life" or alternately "anti-choice", but no one is on record as being "anti-life". It's basically mysanthropy I guess. People would say being "anti-life" is selfish and "why don't you just kill yourself then?" And I guess my responce to that is that if there's not enough to go around it's better THEM than ME.

Then people would also get all bent and say I am callous and insensitive. Well how many of you are pouring money into Unicef and "Save The Children"? One in a hundred? Doubt it. One in a thousand? That sounds about right. If you're not pouring all of your money into these bleeding heart causes does that make you anti-life? Or am I the only one to care less what people think?

And before you come out swinging ask yourself this: Are there any people or persons in the world that you would feel happy if they were dead? (not naming anyone here) If so I would suggest that you are a closeted anti-life person.

A "Jumbled" poet

Today's Jumble words are

Brook
Agile
Oblong
Queasy

Using them, I composed the following.

A nightingale's song stirred in the poet memories of his agile youth, so he leapt over the brook, then leapt back, and leapt over a third time, landing queasy. His stomach soon settled in an oblong box.

What can you make of them?

Fans of such playfulness are invited to join Jumble Bums; we do this every day.

I love the Jumble (“that scrambled word game”) in the morning paper. Some time back I started jotting down the words of the day and turning them into phrases (--canned bamboo * tempo trophy * limber dismay * ). Why not? Sometimes they inspire poems or descriptions for stories. (“Limber dismay” is classic, even if I didn’t think of it!)

So I’m starting this tribe for other lovers of the Jumble and wordplay.
There’s a link in case you wish to play the daily Jumble online.

Legalizing drugs

LEGALIZING DRUGS

Anyone who wants them know how to get them. So if drugs were legalized, if you weren't already doing them I can't envision millions of people going WHOOPIE! And running to the drug-mart for a rock of crack. I read Portugal threw-in the towell and basically anything goes there now. (never verified) But Holland was giving free smack to junkies for a while like 20 years ago in an experiment to see if burglaries and muggings would drop and they did. Enormously. Only the word got-out and every junkie in Europe invaded Holland for the free smack. Then they quit the program. But at least they tried something different no?

At the very least in an era of crazy war-spending, they should legalize marajuana, and I don't even puff. There's two million people locked-up in the U.S. and a large percentage of them are for drugs. So lets say ten percent are in for some stupid pot-related crime. That's 200,000 people. Multiply that by the 25,000 bucks a year that it takes to house, clothe and feed all of these people and (wait now I'm curious)...thats FIVE BILLION BUCKS.

How many hospitals and universities could you create with that much money? But NO politician is EVER going to get elected on a "pro drug" platform. It would have to be explained in great detail to the idiot masses just what the BENEFITS of saving five billion bucks would be as opposed to locking all of the evil pot-smokers up. Even arch conservative William F. Buckley said something to the effect that it was a pointess waste of money or something to that affect.

I'd be interested to hear what the NON-drug-using crowd thinks. What would you do with five billion bucks? A year.

Crooner 'with a calling' sings Elvis ... in Latin
Published: Wednesday August 15, 2007

Die-hard Elvis addicts might not approve, but hits by the man who defined cool when he took rock 'n' roll into the mainstream can now be heard ... in Latin sung by a Finnish literature professor.

In yet another testament to the irrepressible influence of "The King," fans can croon along to the broody "Nunc hic aut numquam" ("It's Now or Never"), shake hips to the slightly scary sounding title "Nunc Distrahor" ("All Shook Up"), or just have fun with "Ne Saevias" ("Don't Be Cruel").

"Latin is an eternal language and therefore I believe it is important to document Elvis' songs also in this eternal language," said Jukka Ammondt, known by his stage name Doctor Ammondt.

The late Pope John Paul II was one of his fans, as is former US president Bill Clinton, according to this professor at the University of Jyvaeskylae who released his first Elvis album in 1995 under the title, "The Legend Lives Forever in Latin."

But why the language of Caesar?

"In my high school years in the early 1960s I had my own band and I sang Elvis in English," said Ammondt.

"Later, as a university professor in the 1990s, I realised that it was my calling to sing Elvis in Latin."

He now tours every summer during university break, playing across Europe or the United States where he has performed in Memphis, home to Elvis' Graceland mansion, New York and San Francisco.

Ammondt, whose lyrics are translated by a fellow professor, is passionate about all things Latin -- he often listens to the Finnish public radio's news broadcasts in Latin, the only one of its kind outside the Vatican.

His musical "calling" started in the early 1990s when he recorded an album of Finnish tango songs in Latin, "Tango Triste Finnicum," before moving on to Elvis. In 2001, he recorded an album in Sumerian, a now-defunct language of ancient Mesopotamia, today part of Iraq.

Ammondt, who has a gift for languages and a sense of humour, insists that Finns have an easier time pronouncing Latin than English.

But it's not everyone who can get their tongue around Elvis' 1956 hit "Tedere me ama" ("Love Me Tender"): "I tenere me, suaviter/Ama intime/Me beasti dulciter/Et nunc amo te/Tenere me adama/Vero somnio/Amo te, o lux mea: Fiat unio."

Even with the twangy electric guitars and heavy horns, the Latin lyrics are jarring and some might say Ammondt is not a born crooner. His renditions have been compared more to karaoke singing than to Tennessee recording studio material.

That doesn't matter for Ammondt, who may be described as eccentric. An expert on Bertolt Brecht, romanticism and melancholy in literature, he doesn't mind jeers or criticism.

He says Elvis' songs have given him the "courage to be myself and to think as an individual and to pay attention to my own feelings."

In his early 60s with long grey hair and round spectacles, the thin, divorced father of three posed almost-nude for his 1997 "Rocking in Latin" album cover.

Ten years younger than his idol, Ammondt, who has his own website, www.drammondt.com, never had the chance to play for Elvis before the rock 'n' roll legend died of a heart attack on August 16, 1977 at age 42.

But he met Carl Perkins, who wrote the music and lyrics to "Blue Suede Shoes" and first recorded the song before Elvis turned it into a smash hit -- and which Ammondt has transformed into "Glaudi Calcei."

Perkins, who died in 1998, was "interested" by his endeavours, Ammondt said modestly.

He said Pope John Paul II, who received some of Ammondt's recordings from the Finnish embassy to the Vatican, was "positive about the idea of promoting the Latin language in this way."

And former US president Bill Clinton, who plays the saxophone in his spare time, sent Ammondt his regards after listening to his music.

So, if anyone has time... I have a request. This isn't related to BM 2007, but if you want to help me out please continue reading. Remember the band Hanson? They created the song Mmmbop back in 1997. K. Well, I am a fan and they've come out with a self released CD. They've gone through a lot of bull shit with main stream labels and such, and are now on their own. If you support musical artists and independent labels you should give them a try. As a fan I am extremely proud of all they have accomplished since the Mmmbop days. I'm tired of ignorant people bashing them when all they are judging them on is Mmmbop. They've grown and lived life, and their music has well. You're not the same person you were when you were 13 now are you? Hope not. Neither are they. My point... I know my chances are 1:100,000 but... they're wanting to write a song for a fan. My chances are upped if I help spread the word. Who wouldn't want a song written about them? That's total sweetness! There's a pic on my profile you can click on that takes you to a link. Click on the link and that's all you have to do. If the link isn't working and you a super nice person you can always copy and paste :.D. That is all~ Swear not to post another blog like this~

Well aren't long dreads great? They just grow and grow and grow and grow and then one day (if you're a guy I guess) eventually you find-out that you can do this great trick. PISS ON YOUR HAIR. I mean it was only a little bit, but isn't that too much? So now I'm faced with either cutting my hair or pissing like a girl. Well DAMMIT, I'm not cutting my hair so it looks like from here on out I'm pissing like a girl.

If your dreads ever get this long, you will find all of this out as well. And don't laugh cause it's not funny.

I read somewhere that while there is no passage in the Koran that explicitly states that they belive in aliens, I have heard the topic seriously discussed (in print) that Moslems have no problem with the idea. Which of course is anathema to Christians. There is also a second to that, in that they believe any depictations of Allah is blasphemous, so that's where they get these really crazy almost psycedelic intricate designs to adorn their Mosques for lack of anything else. I guess Allah can't have a human form or something.

Anyone else ever read about Islam and aliens?

about the plethora of folks on Tribe who appear to fancy themselves as some sort of dieties with magical powers?

Is this what substitutes for common sense, critical thinking; the ability to be genuine, expressive and self-aware these days?

Is there something in the drinking water besides chloramine?

Did these people watch too many cartoons as youth?

Is this really the best response to a culture that appears to value an itchy sort of convenient acquisitiveness among other grave, collective character issues in a land where meaning and value seem to have become distorted or non-existent...

If women ran the world would there be any less violence?

First think of Margaret Thatcher of England. She fought a pretty pointless war with Argentina. Then there's Indira Ghandi from India. I think she fought wars with both Pakistan and Bangladesh (formerly territory owned by Pakistan). I could look it up but feel free to bitch-slap me. Finally there's Golda Meier. She fought one or two wars with the Arabs.

So what do you think? If there was a world-wide coup and all of the men were taken out of power would there be any less violence, or do you think we'd have wars jumping off all over every time some female replacement got PMS?

OK so they make chocolate bars...Galaxy, Snickers, Milky Way, Mars etc
They've recently decided that animal rennet - that attractive sounding newborn calf stomach extract - has been missing from their lives and must now become an essential ingredient in their 'candy' products......WHY????? Surely any cost cutting would be minimal? Do they just hate vegetarians? Or is it a marketing ploy by someone who truely believes that no publicity is bad publicity?
Sorry if those of you accross the pond don't know these products, but hey! Maybe those wacky guys at Hershey are watching and learning?!

I really need to know this for some weird reason. Im currently debating this topic in my photo album for further reference... I want to know how much force there is in this waterfall. Is there a good way to calculate this with math? I also want to know what happens if you stick the arm into the waterfall just above the edge where the water starts to fall. Would the arm be ripped right off? Or perhaps the force is so strong it would dragg the whole body with it? Would it even be possible to get the arm down there at all? I toutched the surface of water while sitting in a motor boat once and the water felt very hard. Any information of interest consearning this is of interest. Specifically the pull just above the fall.

I heard that today: "Depression in teenage girls is really a sexually transmitted disease."
It wasn't the conclusion of a peer-reviewed study. It was one person's observation. It stuck with me because it was so cleverly put. However, I don't how accurate it is. What do you think?

do accidents happen really because of some subconscious desire within?
--had a great day! Everything going my way...the way...then somehow ran into a yellow pole in th pharmacy drive through - guy made me laugh and said time to paint the car yellow...

will they ever clean the duck poop out of the community jacuzzi?
--all still paying the goods each month yet has not been cleaned in a week? two?...no jets doesn't help

will my intentions in my dream manifestation box really be realized this month?
--your positive thoughts welcome...1 - moving/flux....2- financial/flux....3 - all to work out positively...

have I become stagnant in my life once again? ie. eyes open but sensing or seeing very few coincidences lately...
---yes, I know...if I didn't see the yellow pole then were my eyes open? But really, has been usual/mundane life last week or so...

should young kiddos (special ed to boot) be put under so much state wide testing pressure that they begin crying during the test?
--started STAR testing today...sweet girl who is ED was trying her best and then raised her hand to tell me it's so hard and wants to do good but so much more to go ( 1 of 4 days) and started bawling and put head down. Yes, we talked 1-1 and then had her go out for a nice walk with my aide in the fresh air and then she did come back and got right back on it...but, come on! She's 12!!

what happens when you are having stressful dreams yet you know the depth and source of them and yet are stuck in a state of "wating" on other stiuations to become and/or change that you don't necessarily have control over - therefore possibly repeating said dreams?
--wierd ones lately...mostly about moving and precarious flux financially combined - no need to go into detail, but keeping my thoughts positive in the conscious day and doing all my steps need to...just waiting on "the man" if you will ...

Aside from showing your own love without, how can you help others to see, feel, realize love within so that they too can give without?
--my aide would probably be seen as crabby and sarcastic by most and does come off negatively at times with my students. have to remind her of their disabilities and positive ways to recieve and respond to their energies, but she is late 60's and so stuck in her ways..hard at times..

Why do all home/house doors open "in" and businesses' doors open "out?"
--just interesting...conspiracy theorists out there? jk have my own thoughts, but thougt I'd put it out there..

What do you say to one who has recently gotten married to a loving individual that they themselves love, but who misses the excitement of a new relationship and is feeling fear about now living in the status qou of the married/relationship world?
--have had in depth discusssions with this friend and maybe it's the drama pull but nothing I can lend seems to help, it seems.

Why hasn't nabisco ever thought to have peanut butter filling in their oreos?
--wouldn't that be great! Think I did write them that idea yearrrrsss back...Anyone work for them?

why do health insurance agencies think chiropractic care and/or preventive care is unworthy of payment or focus?
--sad state, but so true....doctors would all go out of business and the insurance agencies probably in some sense...

Where did the phrase "Roger" come from?
--seriously. Was he a man of past I should know about? Or does it have any other significance? Have a qoutes, word and phrase book but doesn't have it in there...

...oh, yes, and there are more..many more :) lol Just a few to hit today... Peace to you all for reading my long post and hey..maybe something will hit home with you and help along the way...

How do frequent flyer miles work?

I have read a few articles on the web about some of the tricks airlines pull. I know it's all about profit, not about giving people free things. But what I'm wondering is how many miles you have to have before you can redeem them. If, for example, I earn nearly 13,000 miles going to Europe this year, will I be able to get a discount on a flight from Washington to California? Or are we talking 100,000 miles before I see anything I can redeem at all?

United's website is not very forthcoming about the whole thing.

Thanks!

...about the role SSRIs play in school homicides

I wondering whether...

...the shooters are emotionally troubled and unstable, so they go for treatment, and get handed some anti-depressants, and the anti-depressants don't help, so they go on a killing rampage that has nothing to do with SSRIs, or....

...the shooters are emotionally troubled and unstable, so they go for treatment, and get handed some anti-depressants, and the anti-depressants (or discontinuing them) put them over some precarious edge, or damp down their empathy and remorse and emotional prioritization abilities, so they go on a killing rampage.

Where I *don't* get confused is in the prescription of SSRIs to two to four year olds. This is a Bad idea.

internet meet ups...

Do you think that the internet domain is possible of connecting 2 persons in a loving relationship?

I have known a few who have met people online and are either in a relationship or married - so I guess for some the answer could be yes...

At the same time, I think it is seems so odd and artificial.

Is this just one more domain of communicating and meeting people that I have not yet understood in this technologically increasing society?

If you believe in synchroncity and fate, etc....it just seems so odd that one might find this through the intial typed word and connection. Thoughts?

be there for an ex in an unconditional way - considering they understand the gravity of that intent? Or do you think that an ex is an ex - period and unconditional or not, and the tie should be completely broken so they can completely move on?

one space after a period instead of two?

Who decides these things. Don't they know that the distance allowed by the double space, provides ample room for a new beginning? As well, it allows the comma and period to have their own sense of self!

Standing firm!

Any thoughts?
