and their usage appears to mystify an entire generation of Americans.
Perhaps they want to save trees so they don't buy one, or two for that matter.
That doesn't explain their lack of use. Perhaps illiteracy is more pervasive a problem than we know.
Perhaps Burning Man actually is the center of the universe but that doesn't explain the growing trend of English as Second Language speakers, speaking and writing in English better than native folk.
It's supposed to rain for 4 days in the Bay Area. Looks like a good time to stay indoors, smoke pot, hump, watch movies...
and read dictionaries.

Re: Dictionaries
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 7:27 AMHahaha, "hump." Haven't heard that old chestnut in a while!
I can't speak for anyone else, but I use dictionaries all the time. Online dictionaries, that is, and thesauruses, and encyclopedias. I used to use the real paper and binding type, but I'm online so much it's easier to just click buttons.
I think it's a matter of whether one is curious about the larger world or not. I also believe it's been that way for some time: those who are curious will seek out new knowledge; those who aren't, won't.
It is possible that your impression of dictionary use and comprehension in decline comes from the fact that worldwide communication is so easy and prevalent in so many places. Even those with rudimentary writing skills can get an audience of thousands. Doesn't necessarily mean people are getting less intelligent, just that ignorance has a larger stage on which to perform.
Personally, I am very heartened by the increased communication and awareness. Broader horizons for all and much closer to home. We all have more opportunities to learn from each other, appreciate diversity, and grow!
Cheers,
SW :)

Re: Dictionaries
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 10:40 AMI hesitate avoiding prolixity here, but do wonder what good reading a dictionary does if others are not reading the same ones. On the other hand, it certainly feels like there is something inherently worthwhile in reading a dictionary...whichever one it might be. -

Re: Dictionaries
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 8:53 PMtoo grat of a vocabulary can cause seperation between people, sometimes people feel ( from their own insecurities) that they are being made fun of or made to feel stupid because ouir culture places such importance on words as being factors of intelligence, which is totally wrong, intelligence has little to do with width and breadth of vocabulary, it is the concepts understood that bespeak intelligence and the ability to follow a progression ( among many other things of course) that make up intelligence.
basically, big words threaten some people, cuz it makes em feel like they are less, and some people assume that its an intentional act. -

Re: Dictionaries
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 8:59 PMI'll have to clarify the remembered convo with my brother - as we were a little bit stoned - but he told me that the disparity in vocabulary between a high school drop out and a college graduate is 34 million words....
Yes, there many ways of knowing....and our use of language reflects our understand of many types of knowing about many types of things.

Re: illegtimate banter?
Wed, January 9, 2008 - 3:08 AMI wonder if this is what is known as "the illegitimacy of banter". -

Re: illegtimate banter?
Wed, January 9, 2008 - 12:14 PMSo, my brother didn't recall the conversation about the 34 million words even though I'm kinda certain that it was with him...I'm not recalling who else I would be having that particular type of conversation with and that peculair type of data....
but he did say that the average American has a "daily vocabulary" of 200-300 words.
I wonder if that includes grunts and snorts.

Thu, April 24, 2008 - 2:39 PMmy friends make fun of me for having one in just about every room. you never know when you're going to bust out a word that stumps your friends, or vice versa, and you need quick access to spell and define. -
