Anyone else here cut his (or her) own hair?

topic posted Sun, November 11, 2007 - 12:44 PM by  Josh
I took to doing it out of financial necessity at one point. I use clippers. Problem is, it's hard to cut the back of my own head with them. (If anyone could teach me how to do this, I'm all ears!) So the back is long(er, not really long) while the front and top are short. Too short in one place where I gapped it, but hey, I'm taller than most people, so almost no one notices.

I started cutting my own hair over a year ago. Like it short and going to get it cut every couple of weeks was just getting to be too costly. I'm afraid I don't have any tips though. Had the same problem with it being too long in the back at first. So, just kept adjusting until it got to the right length. Basically, was just trial and error. Eventually got the hang of it and have no problems now. I suggest having a small handheld or otherwise that you can use to check the back of your head like when you go to a barber. That and feel the back. You can sort of do it by touch.

I trusted the same person to cut my hair for about 8 years while living in New Orleans. After Katrina I became a bit of a vagabond and was pretty apprehensive about paying so much to let someone chop away, so I started doing it myself. I keep it pretty short and kind of messy, so I followed my aunt's advice to buy shearing scissors (around $12). They seem to make mistakes less apparent and help to blend the hard lines that straight scissors leave. If there's considerable length that needs cutting, I use standard scissors for the perimeter, then blend with shearing scissors. If it's just a touch up that's needed, shearing scissors alone will usually do the trick.

To cut the back, I put a mirror on my art easel and adjust it to face the bathroom mirror at a slight angle. Whatever it takes to have one mirror face the other, so as to view the back as you cut, will work. Some medicine cabinet mirrors work well because you can adjust the angle as needed. I tried using a handheld mirror for a while, but it's very difficult to hold a mirror, comb, and scissors while trying to actually cut. It's enough of a challenge overcoming the illusion created by the two mirrors.

Using a comb to make sure you have ample space between your scalp and the cut line the way you've seen professionals do will help to avoid creating gaps, though it's not as easy as it looks.

Obviously, cutting the front should be less daunting, but tread lightly at first. Cutting less than you think you should and going back to touch up is better than getting over-zealous and ending up looking like Mr. Spock or that second-grade picture (yeah, you know the one).

You can always pay to go to a good stylist occasionally. Ask their opinion of the overall cut and pick up some pointers as they work.

It takes time and patience, but definitely pays off, in dollars and convenience, once you get the hang of it. Good luck.

Some electric clippers come with angled side attachments that go from #2 to #1 or #0, these are left and right attachments...when buying some clippers, look for these attachment...I think Wahl has them in some of theirs. That's what I've used in the past when I want my hair to look like a $19.99 trim.

It never fails that on a particularly bad hair day I always find myself between paychecks or in a time crunch. So when this is sticking out or that won't lay down I reach for the scissors and SNIP. After a few episodes of SNIP SNIPping the parts I can reach I talk my hubby into trimming the back. Famous last words...Honey all you have to do is start right here and cut straight across to here. Some time later he is cursing himself for being inept and I'm left with a very interesting asymetrical "doo". It is at this point that I either/both find the money and/or time to go in and have a professional take care of it.

Then in a few weeks this is sticking out or that won't lay down and....

I have to update this post as the last time my sweetie trimmed the back of my hair for me he did a great job. When I went in a week or two later to have the doo touched up I told the beautician that my hubby had cut the back and she said, "He's hired." :)

I cut my hair. Mostly because when I pay people to cut it for me, I always end up finding several loose strands to trim. Soooo annoying.

The only problem I have is figuring out how to cut the back evenly. If I'm lucky, somebody I like can snip it straight for me. Lately though I've been letting my hair grow. And whenever I catch a glimpse in my motorcycle's left mirror of my hair flowing in the wind over my shoulder, my smile widens and the world seems a much more beautiful place.

I've been cutting my own hair for years and years.

I usually keep it short enough that I can do the back with clippers. I just use my occipital ridge as a guide in the back where I can't see, and the line extends evenly from the tops of my ears. I just hold my finger down where I want the comb to stop, and glide up the back of my neck, pulling the clippers away when they hit my finger.

I have the most trouble with the top of my head--even though I've been doing it for years, I still can't process visually what my hand should be doing with the scissors in a mirror.

Fortunately, even though it's thinning now I'm in my late 40s, my hair still has quite a bit of curl to it, which, as my mother would say, "covers a multitude of sins."
