Dr. Phil appeal...why?

Who the hell watched DR Phil and why the hell is he still on the tele? I' so tired of watching the commercials and I thought that the fad would have been over long ago. I mean he's not really even a doctor!

Of course he's really a doctor. Do you think an MD is the only kind of doctoral degree or something? If you can't be tolerant or respectful of people's choices, at least don't be ignorant.

I the hell watch him, though not as often as I used to. (The guests and scenarios are getting too dramatic for my taste.)

One of the reasons for his mass appeal and for his being still the hell on the tele, which is *not*, I submit, the same as the mass appeal of other talk-show hosts, is that the school of thought that he comes out of is very practical in its approach. You may call it giving pat and/or glib and/or self-congratulatory answers, but it is a legitimate school of thought among counselors: deal directly with the need for immediate behavioral change and forget about, or find another time and counselor to deal with, the analysis.

It's a response to the schools of thought in the mental health field (such as Freudian and Jungian) that have traditionally involved years of analysis without necessarily yielding any results in real time.

The kind of people who write to Phil McGraw are usually desperate for change and desperate for it yesterday. And an hour-long talk show--with all the commercials you tire of--really only gives about 40 minutes' worth of content. So Phil needs to cut to the chase, and that's his specialty. And people get their immediate gratification, which they generally love.

The down-home Texas-style phraseology and cockiness are all theater, but he's on solid theoretical ground with the way he approaches what he does. His credentials, which don't need your approval, are excellent by pretty much any reckoning that matters, and so is his resume. He did not, contrary to your shallow judgments, get to where he is by accident.

The style is the fad, but the show meets needs, and that won't change as long as Oprah is happy with it, because like it or not, she's one of the most powerful women in the world. She knows what she's up to, she knows whether or not she's getting it, and she'll make sure she does get it. It happens to be a wildly successful business venture, too, but money is no object for Oprah. If she believed in it badly enough, she'd finance it just because she wanted to. Who's gonna stop her? Certainly not you. Change the channel.

    Jeez!

ok so maybe its a middle America thing. I don't get it. You are the first person that I have known to watch it. Maybe its for people in Middle America. I personally can't stand the southern twang and the commercials that are shown are extreemly tack y, disrespectful and unprofessional. Its like watching Jerry Springer or Maury commercials. Its disgusting and repulsive television!

I've only seen him fleetingly, but I suspect he appeals to folks who folks who don't historically have a background in self-introspection or experience with/knowledge of any number of "psycho-therapeutic" traditions, and he probably makes these "things" approachable and understandable to the layperson in an seemingly entertaining way.

He says the things you dont want to hear. That is the surest sign he is a good shrink.

Fact is - his philosophy is very straight forward. Down to earth and effective. Remember that psychology is only theory on what is going on - trought observation and results. It aims to describe the deep mind, and how it is effecting our emotions and then actions and decisions.
Different teorys vary - opinions has changed and there is still alot more to learn. So what a real one is - is highly subjective. Perhaps everyone is right in some points. It,s very time consuming and expensive treatment.

Dr Phil is stating that people always looks to blame something. But the only way to do something about it is to blame oneself as the responsible source. For say - `` it was my inner child who did it´´ Phil would say - Well you are an adult so do something about it!! It,s about taking controll instead of stating causes and then feel relief, beeing an `` wictim´´ or the passive part.

However - the show sucks because the invited people there are utterly STUPID. It,s more of an freak show, suited to be a drama like most TV is. Dr Phil do himself best in the books he writes. I highly respect him.

since moving to LA, I have found that a lot of conversations with people here start with "I saw something interesting on Oprah" or "Dr. Phil says..."

This is a new phenomenon to me (I previously lived in SF and hardly knew anyone who watched network tv, much less Oprah or Dr. Phil) and it is interesting to learn that there are a great number of people that I interact with daily who respect Oprah and Dr. Phil.

I don't think I have an answer for Why?.. except maybe it is regional? In LA, television is a main source of culture, so if perhaps there were Plato and Einstein shows on network television, Dr. Phil and Oprah might not come out ahead...

      I find him offensive--
If he is so wonderful why can't he help his own wife??
Have you seen her ? what plastic surgery hasn't she had??
Where was Dr Phil when her self esteem was so low she had to undergo the knife.
Could he not even help her feel accepted just the way she originally looked??

I like the "he goes well with pills" --Tee Hee

well now, then, he might like himself if he didn't have a "picture perfect" wife... and now what good would that do the world if he didn't like himself? no, i think she did it for his benefit and for the greater good of all mankind... now that's something for her to feel good about, right?
